About the Pininfarina workshop and exhibition

On display from 7 to 12 June 2016 in Turin, the exhibition features projects developed by design students on the theme proposed by Pininfarina: “On board emotions in the mobility of the future”.

The workshop took place between November 2015 and March 2016, and involved a total of 80 students. Each school was followed by one or more designers of the Pininfarina team and all the research was supervised by Fabio Filippini.

As Fabio Filippini, Chief Creative Officer Pininfarina explains “The workshop was intended to offer the vision of tomorrow’s designers on a subject that is particularly dear to Pininfarina.

“The response was enthusiastic and originated projects full of cues that hint at a new future in the way cars will be used. Life on board is imagined as an experience that can give the driver and passengers emotions and entertainment, while remaining constantly connected with the outside world.”

The open-air exhibition, with free entrance, takes place at the Medieval Castle (Borgo Medievale), Viale Virgilio 107 (Parco Valentino), Turin.

“Individuale” is a single seater concept vehicle that offers its driver two different operating modes: Driving (manual) and Relax (autonomous), each one with a different driving position.

The design features essential, clean lines and an overall futuristic, sleek look. The exterior structure is composed of two main parts. The first one contains the motor, the other the cockpit.

In driving mode, the vehicle has a raised cabin layout that allows for increased visibility. The driver controls the steering, brakes and acceleration through a pair of independent, wearable controllers that can be connected to a port in the side panels of the cockpit.

In relax/autonomous mode, the vehicle has a lowered cab configuration that allows the user to relax and enjoy the journey. The controllers are detached and the cockpit turns into a lounge-like space.

The controllers are designed like independent jewel-inspired objects and allow the driver to experience new feelings when driving.

The cities in the future will be worth living. “Legame” becomes a tribute to the city, a mobile monument to stand on and fully enjoy the urban life: it will be worth listening to the sounds and even the smells to breathe because the air quality will improve.

The Legame (meaning “emotional bond” in Italian) concept takes inspiration from an optimistic vision of the city of the future, a healthy, positive environment without pollution or traffic problems.

Legame is a publicly shared vehicle: when not in use, it becomes a sculpture, a bench where anyone can sit thanks to the outlined bench on one side.

The vehicle’s main goal is to amplify the senses of those who will use it – whether they are tourists or commuters – to enjoy the city and making “real” connections with other people.

The only planned virtual connection will exist through a mobile app, which allows to “call” the car. When the destination is close, the vehicle becomes available for another reservation.

The interior is designed to not create distractions: the look is plain and simple, with no sign of technology or interactive screens, which could steal the users’ attention and preventing them for enjoying real life.

“Pininfarina “Legame” will oblige us to forge links with the outside world: tourists will take pictures at significant points of the city, the lovers will be embraced while being caressed by the wind, coworkers can chat after a long day at the office on the way home and everyone can sit on the bench while the vehicle is stopped and read a good book or relax while admiring the panorama.”

The vehicle adopts this idea for its interior, which can modify its own shape thanks to electric impulses – a technology often referred to as 4D Printing, currently under development.

The core feature of the vehicle is Molly, a virtual assistant that is able to manage and meet the user’s needs at 360 degrees and serve as a complete interface between the user, the vehicle and the network.
