Wolfgang Egger to move from Audi to Italdesign Giugiaro

Automotive News has reported that Audi Chief Designer Wolfgang Egger will move to Italdesign Giugiaro. He could be replaced by senior Volkswagen designer Marc Lichte.


The news was reported by Automobilwoche and cited by Automotive News Europe. Wolgang Egger was appointed Audi Group Head of Design in 2007, succeding de’ Silva.

Egger will take up a new heading position at Italdesign Giugiaro, the Turin-based design studio acquired by VW Group in May 2010.

Among Egger’s work at Audi are the new A6 and A3, as well as the 2010 Quattro Concept and the E-Tron Concept.

According to the so-far unofficial report, Egger’s position could be taken by Volkswagen senior designer Marc Lichte, who penned the current Golf.

About Wolfgang Egger

Wolfgang Josef Egger was born on 13 February 1963 in Oberstdorf, Germany.

After completing his school-leaving exams in Sonthofen, he studied Design at the International College of Arts and Sciences in Milan, Italy. In 1989 he graduated as an industrial designer.

Egger began his professional career in 1989 in the Design department at Alfa Romeo. In 1993 he was appointed Chief Designer.

In 1998 he became Chief Designer at Seat, where he was able to input his personal style in, for example, the Seat Ibiza, Cordoba and Altea.

In 2001, W. J. Egger was appointed Head of Design at Lancia. In the same year, however, he returned to Alfa Romeo as Chief Designer. Among the cars developed by Alfa Romeo under his direction were the Nuvola Concept, 156, 166, 147 and the 8C Competizione.

On May 1st 2007, Egger succeeded Walter Maria de Silva as Head of Audi Group Design. In this position he was responsible for the Audi and Lamborghini brands.
