The idea behind Hans N. Steen’s Bachelor thesis at the Braunschweig University of Art was to create a functional yet radical, target group-specific SUV for skiing resorts – in short AUV: alpine utility vehicle.
Conceived for being used in a car sharing service, it is powered by four electric wheel hub motors to minimize fossil emissions in environmentally sensitive areas.
The AUV can accommodate three skiers or boarders, even wearing their boots and gloves. The rugged, minimal interior is designed to just meet the needs of their temporary drivers, while still being aesthetically young and pleasant.
The plastic car body is inspired by traditional industrial design and sporting gear.
The design vocabulary adopted a very minimalistic approach: the AUV is designed to be a robust and reliable tool, and “all the possible functions and forms are reduced to a minimum for having the concept as well defined as possible.”
